Soon the only Online Gaming Gaming?
Most of us are old enough to remember when the Commodore 64 first came out, followed by the Atari system. The first reaction to these systems was sheer amazement we played with our pixels for hours after one hours. Soon we learned how the Artificial Intelligence and let the games replay value suffered.
So why video games have become boring or outdated? Obviously a huge factor is the technology and graphics, but a stronger component of the competition and the ability to adapt. Single player games do not offer the ability to adapt the artificial intelligence of today is not possible for complex strategies or tactics to be used, but we know Who can – Humans! Yes, there is nothing like outthinking, outmaneuvering, animal, possess, fragging, or whatever you want to do to another living, breathing, frustrated man.
If you shot dead on a computer you know they are not emotional, but if you live an opponent, you know that he / she is slamming their keyboards and possibly ripping their cable-modem (Stra Craft comes to mind for this). It is not merely of success, but how successful it was hard to obtain. Even dead "newbs" (new players) after a while, as old You need a challenge, you need someone who is proficient in thinking about the place and maneuvering so that the computer or a newb can never achieve. You have now reached a new level of your gaming assets and the only way to continue to grow as a player is to play the best.
To play the best you need to play against the world, literally. By playing online users can play the best of all users around the world in an attempt to adaptability, focus testing, reflexes, strategy, and yes digital courage. It is not enough to go to a competitor first, then B competitor list to see who outs core or the fastest time trial on a map. That is the weakest form of competition, because it is not direct. No, you play against each other in real time to get the adrenaline rush.
My final example is the game Joust. This game is old, outdated, crappy graphics, and some more players. Nobody really played this game today. That is until it was announced that a multiplayer game on the Xbox 360 has become life. Now you can Joust against others, The game has now evolved from simple mechanics AI to beat a full blown strategy / reflexes game against the best. This can be seen in Mortal Kombat available for PS3 online games. This game is very old as well and used mostly for nostalgia to the online component and breathed life back into the competition.
Just what are the benefits for Single Player games then, if any? Well, the technology is not cheap and most can not afford a PS3 or Xbox 360 Live plus the fee. The benefits are only the costs and begin practice. As the cost gets cheaper the only can benefit from a Single Player map memorization, game mechanics, and the basics of the game has to offer. Most do not want to play against other opponents until the intricacies of the game to understand, and rightly so. Single player games go the way of the Dodo Online Games take it as a cheap place. Who would have thought Joust and Mortal Kombat I would be excited in 2008, more than a decade after their first release? Ask your parents to a child, brother, or go online and experience the wonders of the of someone who spam you with blasphemy, or ripping their modem if you harass them endlessly. Online games bring the worst and the best of us, while Single Player games only alleviate some boredom. Hell, even Pong fun as a national competition. Sending this article to a friend will help them realize their single exit player RPG kick;)
